Discussion about Function - Remixes
Keel
What starts as yet another contribution to the techno spectrum soon erupts into a tenacious onslaught of filthy acid, sonic laser beams and intergalactic funk. That is right, Rrose is hitting hard with his lightsaber, fighting Darth Vader on Death Star's last remaining take off platform. In actual reality Rrose is someone composing tracks in his basement, in virtual reality he's fighting Matrix agents. Through fiber optic lines in line with rhythm structures conceived in cyberspace, Against The Wall is a purveyor of creativity in techno. What I just wrote makes little to no sense on its own. You have to give it a listen. It's Cpt. Picard in a fist fight against the T-1000 on a desolate planet after the Voyager just crashed. This is a brain melting acid tinged affair that is hands down one of the year's highlights. Close your eyes, fasten your seat belts, and yes, fire photon torpedoes! As if things ended here, Vatican Shadow deliver a track so atypical that one might consider a mistake in tracklisting. Fans of their trademark sound will be in for a surprise as this deeply melodic, evocative and melancholic track unfolds, deploying a quivering bass line, mournful drones - and to top it all off - killer acid stabs some two and a half minutes deep. Gorgeous, and when the percussion intensifies some sixty seconds down the line, the result is simply sublime. Some distant guitar riffs are audible, and the acid is restrained yet elegant, pounded into submission by the ever crescendoing beats. Not as dance floor freindly as the Rrose remix, but just as impressive. Vatican Shadow's contribution isn't an obvious banger, but it can prove itself deadly effective if it needs to be.The Recondite remix is not really my thing, but the NSI re-work is a treat, though. A mid tempo breakbeat techno effort, with emotive melodies, in touch with some of the absolutely mind blowing soundscapes laid out across "Incubation". More along the lines of Vatican Shadow's remix. For a four tracker remix package, this release packs quite a punch, and delivers more diversity than many full length albums. The respective producers live up to the task, and if you thought Function's debut albums was quality, the remixers do not disappoint. Although, in my opinion at least, the A/B side is superior, three out of the total four tunes on here are marvellous, each in its own right. Rrose further dives into a universe of techno frenzy and mayhem, Vatican Shadow absolutely flaunt it with infectious acid riffs and captivating melody wotk, while NSI end the voyage with a soothing easy goer. I'd say this is a solid 3.5/5, which is more than great for a remix package. I'd say this one's worth it for the first vinyl alone...
